The EdS degree in educational administration and supervision is a sixth-year post master's degree designed to prepare individuals for senior-level leadership positions in education. Program studies are adapted for the challenges of unique school district roles such as personnel administrator, curriculum supervisor, and directors of special program areas. Upon completion of the program, individuals are eligible to upgrade previously held licenses.

What You Will Study

The Educational Administration and Supervision, EdS is designed to prepare individuals for senior leadership positions in education. Program studies are adapted for the challenges of unique school district roles such as personnel administrator, curriculum supervisor, and directors of special program areas. Upon completion of the program, individuals are eligible to upgrade previously held licenses. Individuals holding administration license (012, class P) are eligible for administrator II license (012, class AP) and superintendent license (011, class AS). Individuals holding supervision license (113, class S) are eligible for curriculum-instructional specialist II license (113, class AS).

The EdS program offers two concentrations - dual language immersion (DLI) administration and superintendent. Students completing the requirements for the dual language immersion (DLI) administration concentration may apply for a certificate. Please discuss this option with the certificate coordinator and complete the process for adding a certificate to a degree.

Candidates for the EdS program should have a master's degree and Level I licensure in administration or supervision. Three years of successful leadership experience is desirable for candidates applying to the EdS program. Students who complete the Educational Specialist (EdS) degree at ECU may be eligible for the Educational Leadership, EdD program's EdS to EdD Pathway. If admitted to the EdD, students will be allowed to count 27 semester hours of EdS course work towards the required courses for the EdD program. Prospective EdS to EdD students must be admitted to the EdD program and are required to follow the same application process as those applying to the traditional EdD. The EdD at ECU requires successful completion of 60 semester hours; however, with the opportunity to count 27 hours from the EdS, students in this pathway will complete the remaining 33 semester hours to earn the EdD degree.  

The EdS degree requires a minimum of 36 s.h. as follows:

I. Core - 18 s.h.
  • LEED 7415 - Introduction to Internal Evaluation in Education
  • LEED 7420 - Theories of Educational Administration
  • LEED 7460 - School and Community Cultures
  • LEED 7483 - Advanced School Law and Policy
  • LEED 7520 - Special Topics Seminar in Educational Leadership (to be taken twice for a total of 6 s.h.)
II. Internships - 6 s.h.
  • LEED 7991 - Educational Leadership Internship Level I
  • LEED 7993 - Educational Leadership Internship Level II
III. Concentrations - 12 s.h.

    • LEED 7408 - Public School Administration
